The motor is bolted to the compressor gear housing, while the shaft labyrinth seal prevents refrigerant from leaking
into the gear box. This semi-hermetic motor is more compact and makes less noise than air-cooled systems. Additionally, it produces far less heat than other motors and doesn’t require expensive mechanical seals to ensure safe operation. The motor’s design also drastically reduces the occurrence of shaft alignment problems. LG’s semi-hermetic motor is able to stay cool thanks to the use of a condensed liquid refrigerant.
